Helpership Training Standards Consultation
Cover Letter

Dear Pathwork Colleagues,1

As we in the PHANA Council moved towards setting up the Pathwork Helpers Association of North America (PHANA)2 more formally, we came to the conclusion that we need to consult with the Pathwork community concerning Helpership Training Standards.

Accordingly, I am writing to you on behalf of the Council to ask for your views -- in particular, your views relating to the 6 questions in the accompanying  questionnaire.  We suggest that you print the questionnaire and email your responses to me.  Alternatively, you can fax or mail your responses to me using the fax/address information below and replicated at the end of the questionnaire.  Whichever mode of responding you choose, please send us your views by May 30.  Council will summarize all the views received and submit a summary report to the Foundation Board.  We propose to circulate our summary of responses to respondents.

We had envisaged doing this consultation after setting up PHANA more formally, but have brought it forward at this time3 so that we can more adequately respond to the description of the Toronto Helpership Development Circle (THDC) Helpership training program sent to us by Sagewalker.  This program started in September 2000 and has 5 trainees.  Noting the considerable differences between the THDC and traditional models of Helpership training, Council recommended to the Foundation that it would be appropriate to consult with the senior faculty of existing Helpership training programs and with a selection of other senior Helpers and elders, including some in the international Pathwork community.

In conducting this consultation, we wish to avoid causing Sage to be overwhelmed with a large correspondence.  For this reason, we suggest that you note your questions concerning the THDC model on your questionnaire and allow PHANA Council to coordinate questions before submitting them to Sage.  We imagine that there will be considerable duplication between the questions submitted and think that this procedure will reduce Sage's correspondence load.  We propose to include in our summary report any additional information that we obtain in answer to questions, and to make this information available to respondents.

Thank you in advance for your help!

In service,

Roddy Duchesne

3. Council was closing in on the task of issuing invitations to North American Helpers to join PHANA when the THDC document arrived.  We will return to that task as soon as we have completed
the current consultation - so invitations will go out this summer. The primary cause for delay in issuing invitations has been associated with  the need to develop a more credible financial
plan to give PHANA the best prospects of being self-supporting and not being a drain on Foundation resources.
