Council Report
To The Foundation
March 2003

1.  ITEMS ON WHICH FOUNDATION BOARD ADVICE/DECISION/ACTION IS REQUESTED

A.    Liability

PHANA has a publicly accessible Register of Pathwork Helpers.  Council wishes to ask for the advice of the Foundation's legal counsel.  For example, should the public Register include any legal text that seeks to absolve PHANA and/or the Foundation from liability in situations in which a worker or client launches litigation against a person listed in the Register?

B.    Chapters and Groups

PHANA Council requests to be informed of the Foundation's new Chapters and Groups policy when this is finalized, and of any decisions that the Foundation makes relating to Chapters and Groups in North America and Australia .  This information is relevant to ongoing PHANA work, and to planning for the August Sevenoaks meeting which is mentioned in Section 4 below.

C.    North American Pathwork Leadership Meeting, August 18-20, 2003

Section 4 below suggests that a representative of the Foundation plan to attend this meeting

2.   PHANA MEMBERSHIP & FINANCIAL POSITION

As of the date of this report, PHANA membership was 55 Helpers + 3 Apprentice Helpers = 58 members.  This was 84% of the membership number (69) that PHANA budgeted to attract by April 30, 2003 , i.e. by the end of PHANA’s first 12 months of operation.  Membership fees and cash donations stood at $6740, or 103% of the $6525 that PHANA budgeted to receive by the end of its first year of operation.

A very important comment on the figures above is that PHANA remains financially NON-VIABLE despite achieving 100% of its budgeted revenue.  The budget estimated the revenue that PHANA could realistically hope to achieve, NOT what PHANA needs to be financially viable.  The extent of PHANA's non-viability is reflected in the fact that its current level of revenue does not allow it to even partially fund a single annual meeting of the Council in addition to paying a Coordinator honorarium.  Unless PHANA can significantly expand its revenue, its future is in serious doubt.  The two main avenues through which PHANA currently seeks to increase its revenue are through (a) Work as directed by the projected North American Pathwork Council, and funded by that Council, and (b) Expansion of PHANA membership, see Section 5 below.  A significant portion of (a) could be cooperative work at a continental North American level on Pathwork training, funded by contributions from Pathwork training programs

A subsidiary comment on the membership and financial numbers above are that they reflect considerable work to boost membership, including (a) Two invitation-to-join mailings -- one in March 2002; one in November 2002 -- to all qualified Helpers and Apprentices who had not yet joined by the time of the mailing, and (b) A tour of US regions by the PHANA Coordinator.

3.   PHANA COUNCIL

As of the date of this report, Council membership was as follows:  Arizona : Ann Conover,  California : Brooks Greene-Barton;   Canada : Roddy Duchesne,  Georgia: Cynthia Schwartzberg,  Mid-Atlantic: Alegria Barbara Strauss,   Minnesota Dottie Titus ,   New York : Donna Gray, Vermont : Sahra Aschenbach

In addition, Council has been and continues to be greatly assisted by Jan Rigsby ( Australia and California ).  Lorraine Marino ( Philadelphia ) provides liaison with “The 50/50 Work©”.

4.   ONGOING PROJECTS

Leadership and Helper Training Meetings

The Foundation Board considered a preliminary draft proposal for a Helper Training Meeting at its October meetings.  A revised draft proposal has been prepared and was circulated to North American Affiliates, Foundation Trustees, and the Foundation Office on February 26, 2003 . The revised draft is entitled: North American Pathwork Leadership and Helper Training Meetings.

The chief change in the revised draft reflects the need to give more prominence and time to leadership issues.  These issues are now proposed to be considered at a largely separate Leadership Meeting which shares common opening and closing sessions with the previously proposed Helper Training Meeting.

It is proposed that the Leadership Meeting focus chiefly on setting up a North American Pathwork Council.  The concept of this Council was discussed in very general terms at the Foundation Board’s October meeting.  Brazil already has a Council, so there is an established precedent for the idea.  The relationships between this North American Pathwork Council, the Pathwork Foundation, and PHANA are among the many aspects to be discussed at the meeting.  The presence of a representative of the Foundation will materially assist these discussions!

The dates of the meetings are set for August 18-20, 2003 , with the location being Sevenoaks, as previously proposed.

Register of Pathwork Helpers

The Register of Pathwork Helpers is accessible on the PHANA web site (www.phana.org).  The web site also includes information on PHANA, and selected materials on Helpership.

The principal enhancement that is required for PHANA Register arrangements is to achieve better coordination with the Foundation website.  A link between the current Foundation website’s Helper and Counselor page and the PHANA Register is still not in place – in spite of many attempts to have this link inserted over more than 4 months.  This means that people going to the Foundation web site looking for a Helper are not directed to the PHANA web site with its Register of Pathwork Helpers.

Web and Desktop Publishing Services for PHANA Members

85% of respondents to the 1999 survey of Pathwork Helpers expressed the wish that PHANA provide publicity services, helping members to publicize their practices and events.

Council has signed an agreement with a Registered Graphic Designer whereby this designer will offer web and desktop publishing services to PHANA members at special member prices, with PHANA receiving a percentage of fees paid.  The services include web page creation (where applicable, with links from the Register of Pathwork Helpers to the pages created using this service), web site creation, and desktop publishing services.  Desktop publishing services include the development of logos, and layouts for business cards, letterheads, and envelopes.

The above service is now effectively operational and is publicized on the PHANA web site.  More publicity will be given to the service as invitations go out inviting members to renew their subscriptions.  This publicity is scheduled for the end of March, in preparation for renewals that are due for May 1, 2003 .

Pathwork Teachers Helper Project

85% of respondents to the 1999 survey of Helpers identified: “sharing exercises and strategies for teaching, workshops and programs” as a service that they wished PHANA to provide.  Commencing operation sometime in the first half of calendar 2003, the Pathwork Teachers Helper Project (PTH) project will foster the sharing of teaching materials using a combination of the PHANA and Foundation web sites.  The PTH project is a cooperative venture involving PHANA and the Pathwork Press.  Dottie Titus, assisted by Jan Rigsby, leads the PHANA portion of the project.  Tom Hubbard leads the Press portion.

Discussion Papers

Council proposes to create discussion papers aimed at making the August Sevenoaks meetings more productive.  These include a North American Pathwork Council discussion paper, summary information on helper trainings in North America,  a draft Code of Conduct, and a discussion paper proposing definitions of key terms for use by PHANA, e.g. in the Register of Pathwork Helpers.  Terms include: Pathwork Helper, Apprentice Helper, and Helper Trainee.

Council is currently considering a preliminary draft of the North American Pathwork Council discussion paper.  Following Council discussion and any necessary revision, it is proposed to circulate a revised version of this preliminary draft to the Foundation and to North American Affiliates.

5.   UPCOMING PROJECTS

Newsletter

The above projects/services pave the way for a further project: the distribution of a PHANA Newsletter by the end of March.  The newsletter is needed to inform PHANA members about PHANA and to encourage them to renew their subscriptions.  The newsletter will likely use an email/web combination: salient points in the email, with a more complete text on PHANA's web site.  We will send printed information via regular mail to people not on email.

Extension of PHANA Membership

PHANA membership has so far been restricted to North American Helpers and Apprentice Helpers who (among other criteria) have been recognized at some time by a US Pathwork Region.  Council is working on a scheme to allow Helpers, Apprentices, Trainees worldwide to join PHANA if they wish.

Q&A Project

As agreed with the Foundation in October 2002, Council proposes to distribute unedited Q&A texts to PHANA members on CD.  The implementation of this project awaits copyrighting of the Q&A materials.  The Foundation Office continues to work on the copyrighting process.
